Currently Watching: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

I’ve seen the movie several times a few years back when it first came out, like 11 years ago. But it is nice to get back to it. I do kind of miss Kevin Smith movies that has that Jersey feel. Before watching the movie, you do have to be a fan of his movies because a lot of them do talk about things that previously happened. If you have seen them, you can appreciate the movie so much more.

Here’s a list of movies that you need to see first…

  • Clerks
  • Mallrats
  • Chasing Amy
  • Dogma

After watching those, watch Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Jay and Silent Bob are generally additional background characters, they give more color to the story but most of the time they don’t add much up because of their toilet/drug/sex humor provided by Jay since Silent Bob is basically silent almost throughout their movies. But usually, at one point in the most of these movies, Silent Bob will eventually speak and is the voice of reason and will be the turning point of the main protagonists choices.

This is the only movie that made them the protagonists. This is interesting, because I’ve been a fan of all the movies and I really wanted to see Jay and Silent Bob shine. Also, I do wonder how the movie will turn out when Silent Bob is Kevin Smith who is the director and writer of the movie. So I’m wasn’t really sure if he would do okay to be the actual star of it. But it turns out, both Jay (Jason Mewes)  and Silent Bob did pretty okay, especially since we’ve been so used to seeing them on different movies, we just accepted their actions regardless of how idiotic things turn out.

Another interesting thing is the use of common characters in the movie, so you’d see some repetitive actors acting out different characters. Like Ben Affleck will be the character from Chasing Amy, and later on you’d see him again as just himself who mentions that they were in the movie Dogma. Good thing their counterparts don’t meet up in one scene. The thing is, if you are a fan of the movies, you’ll just accept it all, it won’t bother you too much. But if this is the first movie from Kevin Smith that you’ll see, it can get real confusing.

The plot itself is very light. Jay and Silent Bob realize that there is a movie going to be made about their characters “Bluntman and Chronic” (this is more understood in the movie “Chasing Amy”). They realize that they didn’t get any money because of the use of their likeness, but this get’s a little derailed because they were more offended by people calling them names and such on the internet. At this point they are on the way to stop the movie from happening so they won’t be ridiculed, and that’s where the journey starts. The journey is what makes it all so funny and entertaining. There is a lot that happens, but mostly it’s weird things, but it’s all good.

There is also a lot of interesting cameos in the movie which can be fun if you are a fan of movies in general. If you are familiar with Dawson’s Creek, American Pie, Star Wars and more, you can get a laugh here and there.

The movie is pure fan service while making new jokes along the way, but as I mentioned before, you have to see the previous movies first before you can get to appreciate this one. But I do highly recommend it especially to fans of Kevin Smith.

  1. While I enjoy this one, I feel like it was the beginning of the end for Kevin Smith. While his humor was always juvenile, his protagonists tend to have wit, which Jay lacks.
