Review: A Plague Tale: Requiem (Xbox Series X)

Before I played “A Plague Tale: Requiem,” I did play “A Plague Tale: Innocence” some months ago. I found the concept interesting because it somehow relates to the black plague. “A Plague Tale” is fiction, but nevertheless, it is interesting that it has a real historical element to it. The story revolves around the siblings Amicia and Hugo. Amicia is the protector of Hugo. And her young brother Hugo has the power to control the rats called the Prima Macula. Hugo doesn’t particularly want the power because it is somehow inherently destructive. And in most cases, it is out of control and rats will eat anything it sees living.

Review: Record of Lodoss War – Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (Xbox Series X)

Here’s my game review of Record of Lodoss War. Deedlit In Wonder Labyrinth.

The graphics is good, reminds me of the PSOne era. Obviously inspired from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night by Konami. There is a good variety of style to the levels which I really liked. There is a graphical bug that shows up when I see a game over screen. Then again, it’s not that noticeable and it’s not really a bother. Other than that, the game looks fine the way it is.

Quick resume doesn’t work properly. Most of the time, once I return to the game after a day of rest, it only gives me a blank screen. I’m forced to close the game, and start it all over again.

In terms of gameplay, the controls are weird. I was not comfortable with the default controls. I had to change almost all the buttons to make it feel good. But I do commend them that every button layout can be configured to your own liking. I think it took me 2 hours to really get to a point that I was comfortable with the controls. After that, I never looked back at the configuration screen. I enjoyed every minute of the game after that.

I like that very early in the game, you can switch from one element to another. You can either absorb yellow energy or blue energy. If you are using blue energy, you get damage from blue energy and vice versa. This reminds me a lot of the top down shooter called Ikaruga which uses the same mechanic.

The game reminds you a lot of Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth. In general it has almost the same length, but it feels like Castlevania has a lot more to offer than Deedlit does. But don’t let that stop you. Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is a good game.

I only wish that they designed boss battles with the skills you have in mind. Once you have the will o the wisps, you can pretty much use that for most of the battles.

Just like in Castlevania Symphony of the Night and other Metroidvania games, it has areas where you can save and teleport. Saving is instant, just pass through the save point and the game is saved. No need for an extra button to save the game.

You also get abilities that can make you reach certain areas that was not accessible before. The bow and arrow for example can open certain doors, and the high jump can get you to high places unreachable before.

Bosses are challenging but not impossible. All of them will have a specific pattern. It won’t be easy to see them but it is easy to learn after a few deaths.

At first, the story feels confusing, everyone you talk to seems vague. No one gives you any direct answers. But it all clears up at the end. It did very well, but the story is very light, but there is some emotional weight to it at the end.

I like that you don’t need to know the entire history of Record of Lodoss War considering that it has a long history of games, manga, stories and more. You’ll understand pretty much the game on its own. And if you are familiar with the story, then playing this will be confusing at first, but it does clear up close to the end.

Overall I think it’s a great game, fun although very short. Bosses are hard but manageable. I hated the controls, but that was an easy fix.

Rating the game at 3.75 out of 5.
